Overview

Now in its fifth year, Art in the Dark challenges artists to create projects that not only fit the specific contours of the great, urban outdoors but that must illuminate the dark, using sustainable materials and energy wherever possible. Over four nights, the initiative will light up Auckland's Western Park with creative projects from innovative artists in New Zealand and abroad.

Last year over forty light art installations were on display for the 50,000 visitors, ranging from short films, projections, performances, installations and large scale immersive experiences. Participants for this year's event were given the non-linear theme “Out Of Nothing”.

Attendees can expect a cubic window to a world of seemingly infinite proportions suspended in thin air, an animation projected onto one of the largest trees in Western Park depicting the Maori god of forests - Tanemahuta, and an interactive science installation that lets audiences influence when and how intensely bacteria glow.

Art in the Dark lights up Western Park from November 13 - 16 from 8pm-midnight.
