California Design 1930 – 1965

Overview

Auckland Art Gallery is injecting warmth into winter with their latest exhibition all the way from the sunny shores of California. California Design 1930 - 1965: Living in a Modern Way is an essential chapter in the history of cool, presenting a cross-section of items from the most influential design period in modern California.

The retrospective is the first of its kind in the country, showcasing 250 design objects which demonstrate the influence of Californian designers, artist and artisans on products, furnishings and homes of mid-20th Century America. California Design comprises an impressive collection of furniture, fashion, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork, photographs, architectural drawings and iconic industrial designs. It's literally a modern treasure trove featuring such items as the world's first barbie doll, Charles and Ray Eams furniture and Paul László textile designs.

The opening of the exhibition also marks the return of the Auckland Art Gallery's popular Open Lates. The monthly events include music, talks and screenings of American classics, such as Tom Ford's A Single Man and The Graduate.
