Kokako - CLOSED

There's little doubt that this fresh new addition to the Grey Lynn community will soon become a coffee stop amongst the locals.

Overview

So, I've got a bit of a thing for refurbished historical buildings. They seem to just ooze character, charm and that understated sense of recycled cool. That's probably part of the reason why Kokako's new digs in the old Grey Lynn Post Office will likely start seeing me pop back in on the regular.

For some unbeknownst reason to me, I'd decided to stop drinking coffee in November. However, when I sat down to have a chat with Kokako owner, Mike Murphy, right next to the onsite roastery, I decided that just one coffee would be ok. And it was quite the welcome return to caffeine; good coffee, good start.

At the core of Kokako's philosophy is sustainability. The effort that has gone into executing this is evident everywhere. Much of the fit out has been sourced from local recycle yards or local fabricators, the menu is largely made up of certified organic produce (there's something kinda cool seeing Grey Lynn honey as an ingredient) and my favourite feature, little tins on each table growing herbs for you to garnish your meal. Nothing quite like some fresh basil on your baked eggs. Plus, they stock Nice Blocks, which are probably the coolest thing to come out of Summer so far. So that's an all 'round win in my books.

The menu is vegetarian, but not in a way where you really even notice. The food is creative and varied, with a fusion of flavors that sets it apart from other vegetarian based cafes. With a selection of coffee beans, each with a short narrative about their origin, there is a real feel of experience about Kokako. All this is complemented by a colourful cabinet selection of slices, cakes and loaves.

And, if that's not enough to get your appetite going, there's an Affogato that uses Kohu Road ice-cream. If you haven't tried Kohu Road, right now, go and try it. It will change your life.

Nestled in on the corner, Kokako is fresh in both its fit out and menu. The staff are knowledgable, friendly and clearly passionate about what they do and  there's little doubt that this new addition to the Grey Lynn community will soon become a favourite amongst the locals.
